Kate Bingaman Burt: Drawing-of-the-everyday extraordinaire. I’ve picked out a few of my favorites, and have also included her introduce-me, “hello nametag” video. Her artwork embodies lo-fi–perfectly imperfect sketch-style drawings of things you wouldn’t usually think to commemorate. Kate’s “Daily Purchase Drawings” stir up what it means to consume. She documents the process of consumption for all to see, with all of its self-preservation, pleasure-provision, and mass-produced convenience splayed out on the table. It is hard to look at life in a day-by-day sketch because it can oversimplify what goes on in the everyday. But Kate somehow transforms this into a brutally honest artifact that demystifies ‘the self’ on the best day and represents ‘the self’ on a realistic day.
